North Dakota GOP Screws Over Santorum

(H/t The Other McCain)

In short, Rick Santorum won the North Dakota caucuses and Mitt Romney came in third place. However, the delegates being sent to the Republican National Convention will overwhelmingly be Romney supporters, because the state convention rigged it to make sure that Romney would win. The GOP establishment wants Mitt Romney as the nominee, the voters be damned.

“You weren’t on the committee, ma’am.”

Exactly how much credibility will Romney have as the nominee with only 40% of the vote, and when so many of his delegates were selected not by rank-and-file voters, but by establishment and Romney operatives gaming the system?

  1. This is exactly the point I was trying to make with my comments on other posts re: legitimacy. Santorum only got 40% of the vote in North Dakota, yet you rightly recognize that he won the state because he got more than anybody else. He won with a plurality rather than a majority, but he still won. It’s wrong for the party elites to overturn the will of the voters the way they did in North Dakota.

The same argument applies at the national level. Whoever wins, wins, even if it’s just with a plurality not a majority. You can’t decry what happened in North Dakota as “rigged” and “gaming the system” while arguing for exactly the same thing to be done at the national level to another candidate!
