Photo of the day: The Bund at Night, Shanghai

the Bund at night, ShanghaiIt is such an iconic scene. In the old days, the Bund was the financial center of Asia–like modern-day Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo combined. However, while Shanghai is now reascending, the Bund today is little more than a museum piece–much of the action takes place across the Huangpu River in Pudong. To the left of this photo, there is the dome of the old HSBC building (now owned by a Chinese bank), perhaps still the grandest bank in Asia, while to the right is the clock tower of the old Customs House. The green roof of the old Cathay Hotel (now the Peace Hotel), which was featured in the movie, Empire of the Sun, is just beyond the frame of the photo, on the right.
