Iowa evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats has gotten into a spat with Donald Trump. The details of which can be found here, but I want to focus on part of Vander Plaats’ statement on why, as a Christian, he rejects Trump:
“Right now Donald Trump is saying, ‘The establishment is warming up to me. Why? Because I know how to deal,’” Vander Plaats said. “Well I’m sorry, but the sanctity of human life is not up for the art of the deal. God’s design for marriage is not up for the art of the deal. The US Supreme Court trying to make law is not up for the art of the deal. Our alliance with the nation of Israel is not up for the art of the deal.”
Vander Plaats gets this exactly right. These are not merely political issues: They are moral issues as well, and there can be no compromise when it comes to issues of basic right and wrong. Yet, Trump seems to believe that these issues, like every other issue, are negotiable.
For the record, Vander Plaats has lined up behind Ted Cruz this election, but this was by no means a given prior to the election season, as he had endorsed Huckabee in 2008, and Santorum in 2012.
