I visited Bangladesh in 1988, soon after Islam had been declared the state religion. Many people in Bangladesh realized that this had been a bad mistake, even then. The Saudi government had pressured the Bangladeshi government into taking this step, promising that they would flood Bangladesh with relief and development funds if they did. Once Bangladesh declared itself an Islamic state however, the only money the Saudis sent–and would ever send, as was apparent even was early as 1988–was money to fund the setting up of madrasas to brainwash the Bangladesh youth with their bat guano crazy brand of Islamic extremism. This is a policy that is bearing fruit today throughout the Islamic world.
