It tells us that they were all like Trump in their crass hypocrisy, demagoguery, lies, complete lack of principles, misogyny, bigotry, uncouth nature, and childish immaturity, but only when not in the public eye. They feel comfortable with Trump, and have always felt comfortable with Trump, because he is one of them. There’s absolutely no daylight between their characters and motivations, and his.
The difference is that they came up through the political system, which has up until this point punished people who publicly behaved and thought like Trump, so they became adept at hiding their natures, by saying one thing in public, and quite another thing in private. Trump, on the other hand, came up through show business, where shamelessness is rewarded. His celebrity allows him to break the rules, and behave in public as they behave in private.
Were Gingrich, Palin, Christie, and Giuliani, for example, ever really, in any way, conservative and principled? Or were they just craven dwarfs chasing after the golden ring? Maybe they were sort of conservative, and sort of principled, but neither of these things mattered quite as much to them as prestige and power. Everyone is a huckster, selling products they don’t use or believe in to a gullible audience made up of rubes in the heartland who have no idea what these people think and do in private. These politicians have done exactly what Hannity, Drudge, Limbaugh, and untold other media figures have done as they have pimped Trump. However, instead of chasing ratings, they have chased power.
They support or tolerate Trump because they are like him, and because they like him. It’s all political calculation to them. They will say and do whatever allows them to keep feeding at the trough, or whatever gets them that higher public office. God help us all.
